Our 2024 honorees are Rev. Barry and Joni Robison

Rev. Barry and Joni Robison were first invited to camp by Rev. Paul Zieber in 1985, to be counselors at the Conference’s first-ever Elementary Music Camp at Greene Hills.  When only 14 children registered, Paul got permission from the Camping Office to hold the week-long camp anyway.  Paul not only was dean of the camp, but directed the musical the campers performed each year.  As the camp grew in numbers every year, Barry and Joni continued to be involved, only taking 3 of the early years off as children were born to them.  When they came back to camp in 1992, Paul asked Barry to co-dean with him.  Joni became Barry’s co-dean in 1995, at which time Paul shifted to directing the musical full-time.  Paul was a huge blessing in the formation and continuance of Elementary Music Camp!

Although MANY folks were faithful and effective camp counselors and assistant deans at Elementary Music Camp over Barry and Joni’s years of involvement, 4 people deserve special recognition. Beginning in 1988, Deb Noss served as Elementary Music Camp nurse for a total of 30 years.  Linda Wright came to camp as a counselor in 1992, and with Paul’s retirement, began directing the musical in 1998.  She was the camp’s musical director for 23 years.  Former campers (and later counselors) Rev. Kristopher Sledge and Barry and Joni’s son, Gabriel Robison, were trained to take over as deans, which they did in 2018.  Barry retired from camping that year and Joni in 2022.  They were immensely blessed by these 4 folks and countless other very dedicated people through the years.

Barry was ordained an Elder in The United Methodist Church in 1985. For 33 years he served churches in Red Lion, Salladasburg, Berwick, Selinsgrove and Stewartstown, before being appointed as Conference Superintendent of the Harrisburg District in 2015.  After 8 years as a Superintendent (the last 3 years as Dean of the Cabinet), he retired from active parish ministry in 2023.

In retirement he is working for the United Methodist Foundation of Pennsylvania as Director of Relationships and Stewardship Development with the churches in the Susquehanna Conference. He is also serving a second stint as President of the Conference Board of Trustees.

Joni began working part-time for the Susquehanna Conference in October 2002, first as Interim Assistant Director of Discovery Place, and then as Camping Assistant beginning in January 2003.  In her camping position she processed summer camp registrations, tracked clearances for volunteers and communicated with camp deans, while continuing to assist in Discovery Place as needed.  When the Director of Discovery Place resigned in the spring of 2016, she became the Director, a position she held until her retirement in June 2023.  During COVID in 2020, knowing that the camping program would be affected financially by camps being shut down for the summer, she resigned from her Camping Assistant position.  Beginning in October 2008 she also worked part-time for Weis Markets, retiring in December 2023.

In retirement, Barry and Joni live in Selinsgrove and are active in Christ Community United Methodist Church, where Barry had served as pastor from 1999-2009.  They are the parents of 2 adult children and have 3 young grandchildren, who they hope will start attending camp when they are old enough!

Barry and Joni remain committed to and supportive of the camping program, having seen the tremendous spiritual impact camp has made in the lives of hundreds of people over the years.  To God be the glory!
